Natural History
Drawing Water-Artists and Scientists Explore Northern Lakes. In 1981 the National Science Foundation began the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program to study causes and consequences of change to ecosystems. The University of Wisconsin Trout Lake Station is one of 25 US Study sites.
In 2010, seven scientists and six artists met to explore the nature of change in the northwoods. Wayside display boards were created and installed at six locations to inform visitors about the project. These colorful signs incorporate original art, historic photos, poetry and quilt blocks to bring the Trout Lake LTER’s world class research to life.
Touring the exhibit: Start at the Allequash Lake boat landing a few miles south of Boulder Junction east of Hwy M. This sign explains the project and gives locations of the other displays. View other signs at North Trout, Sparkling Lake, Crystal Lake and others. To learn more, click here http://lter.limnology.wisc.edu/lterarts
